about

My grandmother (Babci) loved music - not unlike my Mother. Sitting in Babci's kitchen (one of my sanctuaries) many years ago we were talking about songwriting and she said, "you know Bobby, I could write a song". I said, "great let's write one together". So we did.

The lyric sheet in her own handwriting can be seen in the video. Keeping in mind she came to the US in 1922 as was barely literate 13 year old (little to no formal schooling, she taught herself how to read and write - and quite frankly her English was way better than my Polish). She had been literally abandoned in Poland right before the outbreak of World War One. Her parents were going to send for her but the war interfered with that and she could not get here until 1922.

The lyrics are written in sort of Polish & English. Penglish if you will. See if you can decipher any of it. I know what all the lines are, have always remembered the melody and at long last have recorded the song. Released as a special Mother's Day single.

I recorded the basic tracks in the town of Zakopane, Poland at the foothills of the Tatra Mountains with a group of Goral musicians to get that authentic mountain feel that my grandmother loved so much. I’m playing the accordion my grandparents bought me. The song is a bridge to the past - a waltz.
